Not links, but a certain amount of text is shown and when your mouse hovers over it the box expands and shows more text? what do you mean the posts stop loading? to go to the next page (to see further posts) you have to use the pagination (this theme doesn’t have infinite scroll). or do you mean that the pictures on posts don’t show up? that could be because of your internet connection (or broken image links), i have that too sometimes.

what do you mean not cover the posts? it shouldn’t cover the posts as the posts automatically resize to the middle of the screen and the updates box is on the right. maybe your screen is too small?
for a drop down, look for a drop down updates tutorial and replace it in the theme.
